Incomplete Masterpiece ‘BERSERK’
On May 20, 2021, there was one obituary.
Kentaro Miura, the creator of “Berserk” and “Gigantomachia,” has passed away.
Berserk is a dark fantasy manga that can be considered unique in Japan. It is one of those manga that I have read over and over again since I was young.
In recent years, the story has been produced at a pace of only a few episodes a year, or one book every few years, and the progress of the story has been so slow that fans in Japan have been wondering if it will ever be completed.
HUNTERxHUNTER is famous for its writer’s hiatus, but so is BERSERK. Berserk was also not consistently serialized, and I was eagerly waiting for the news of its resumption.
Unfortunately, the completion of Berserk, which readers had dreamed of, came at an unexpected time.
I have read numerous manga, but Berserk is not a happy manga that I would recommend to anyone.
It is the only story that is unpredictable and occasionally has cute descriptions that approach the reader. However, it has a strong drawing ability that expresses both eroticism and grossness, and there are scenes that may cause trauma to light manga lovers.
The protagonist, Guts, has one eye and one arm, although he is physically fit.
He uses a large sword as a weapon and battles throughout the night against ghosts that appear from the world of the ghostly world (kakuryo) due to his curse.
He is a warrior who travels with a handicap and in a situation where he is constantly debuffed.
The purpose of his journey is to take revenge on his comrades-in-arms who betrayed his former friends and lovers.
Called the Black Swordsman, he travels on a journey of revenge without being welcomed by anyone.
In his journey, the number of beings he can call friends gradually increases.
A fairy, a boy, a broken-hearted lover, a lady, a lady’s valet, a witch girl, a mermaid.
The occasional skeletal swordsman.
I’ve never seen a party like this, not even in manga.
Even Dragon Quest does not have this kind of diversity.
It feels as if he is carrying more baggage to his handicap.
However, the clumsy teamwork, the mental strength of the main character, and the awakening of each individual’s personality will help him get through the difficulties.
The story is basically in darkness, but when it occasionally breaks out, the light is bright and dazzling.
The reader will be impressed each time.
The light-hearted elements are gradually increasing, with the surviving former comrade Rikkelt traveling elsewhere. And Griffith, the war buddy who betrayed us, has created his own country, but it’s not hostile. From a situation where everything could be the enemy, to a situation where the ultimate evil is God Hand. I had a feeling that the final evil would be God Hand, the one who betrayed his comrades and sacrificed his friends.
However, the reader has no way of knowing what happens next once the main character’s girlfriend Casca’s memory returns.
I was hoping for the completion of the story because I couldn’t imagine it.
I am truly saddened that it is no longer possible.
I had never heard of it until the author passed away. I learned that Berserk is a work that is highly regarded around the world.
The fact that it became an unfinished masterpiece seems to have shocked the world.
I have a promotional poster that I brought home from my time as a bookstore employee.
Volume 33 will have Griffith on the cover.
Before Guts and his friends head to Fairy Island, just before Falconia appears, I guess.
I have a poster for sale on eBay.
I would be happy to give them away to fans in Japan, but I would also like to give fans around the world a chance to get their hands on them.
