ShonenJump. 01

manga
2021.10.02

This will be a blog about Weekly Shonen Jump, as we have a lot of Jump related goods on eBay.
The last article on Dragon Ball was well received, so this time I’m going to write about the meaning of English titles of “Jump” works.

First of all, what Jump is to me is that it has existed since I was born, and I have been reading it since I could remember. Monday means Jump, and Jump means Monday. It’s so routine, it’s like a routine for Japanese boys.

I would like to pick up the titles of the works I have touched, in no particular order, and introduce the meaning of the titles!

First of all, the symbol of Shonen Jump, Dragon Ball.
DRAGON BALL; The seven balls that appear in the story. That’s the Dragon Ball.
The title in Japanese is also Dragon Ball, and the purpose of the beginning of the story was not to fight, but to search for the Dragon Ball.
You can read more about the characters in my article.

One Piece represents Shonen Jump today.
ONE PIECE; The title in Japan is also ONE PIECE. This is the story of a pirate who sails in search of a treasure called One Piece. With over 100 volumes to go, we can’t take our eyes off the story as it finally heads towards its final chapter. It’s a ship we’re all on, so let’s ride it to the end.
The Devil Fruit uses a unique Japanese wordplay called onomatopoeia. It doesn’t seem to have been reproduced in English, but I’d like to find out.
I have written about the event in the article. Keep an eye out for lots of goodies coming up.

It has been completed, but the anime continues and has become a historical hit.
DEMON SLAYER -KIMETSU NO YAIBA-; The title in Japan is “KIMETSU NO YAIBA”. It means the blade of a sword that destroys demons.
A sword is a samurai’s sword. The story is set in Japan about 100 years ago.100 years ago, Japanese people didn’t have swords. They have special swords to defeat the demons. The demons are Oni. Oni are unique Japanese monsters. Oni is often described as an ogre, but in this work it’s a daemon.
I’d like to write an article about the names of the characters one day, as their meanings have implications. The characters in this manga use difficult kanji characters that even Japanese people don’t usually use. These are kanji that you don’t even learn at school.

Naruto, the story of the ninja that every man loves.
NARUTO; Even in Japan, the title is Naruto. The main character’s name is Naruto.
The word “Naruto” has a meaning. “Naruto” means a strait with swirling waves, and there is a bridge called the Naruto Strait on the border between the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean in Japan. There’s also a theme park based on Naruto’s village nearby!
The family name of Naruto is also “Uzumaki”. “Uzumaki” is a whirlpool. The fish cakes( Kamaboko ) with a whirlpool design are called “Narutomaki”. In the manga, the fish cakes on the ramen noodles at a ramen shop called Ichiraku is a “Narutomaki”.
Naruto Uzumaki = swirling waves, whirlpools.
Sasuke is the name of a ninja who is said to have existed. The show Ninja Warrior originated in Japan and is called Sasuke in Japan. “Uchiha” is a Japanese fan. This is why his costume has a Japanese fan painted on the back.
It has a lot of meaning, just like the characters in Dragon Ball, and I’d like to write another article about it some time in the future!

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has also collaborated with GUCCI and the Louvre.
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure; The meaning is the same in Japan.
Jojo is the nickname that the Joester family will carry on.
Jonathan Joestar, Joseph Joestar ,Jotaro Kujo, Josuke Higashikata ,Giorno Giovanna, Jolyne Cujoh, Johnny Joestar, Josuke Higashikata.( Giorno Giovanna is set in Italy, so the Italian pronunciation is JoJo. )
Recently “JoJoLion” has been finished, and are looking forward to the animation of the 6th part, “Stone Ocean”. Personally, Stone Ocean is my favourite of Jojo’s. However, I thought it would be impossible to animate it, especially the last part of the story. I’m really looking forward to seeing how they recreate it.
The stand abilities in the work are taken from rock bands and classic songs from around the world, and the visuals are original and appealing. There is a lot to say about JoJo and I have a lot of merchandise that I will be selling on eBay.

It is said that Captain Tsubasa has influenced football all over the world.
Captain Tsubasa; In Japan, it’s Captain Tsubasa. “Tsubasa” is the name of the main character.
“Tsubasa” means wings. In fact, it is sometimes given to Japanese names. Tsubasa’s family name is Ohzora. Ohzora is the big sky. It’s a reality anime name for wings flapping in the big sky! His speciality is overhead kicks and driving shots.
When I heard that Zidane and Roberto Carlos had watched this animation, I was proud to be a Japanese.

I can talk a lot about these 6 titles, and I hope to delve into them in turn in a future article.
In the next article, I would like to introduce some of the works that were published when Shonen Jump was known as the Golden Age. Next, let’s check out the latest Shonen Jump, shall I?

Please check back as I hope to add more Shonen Jump merchandise as I go along.
