In this article, I will pick up titles up to the golden age (1996) when Shonen Jump became most popular.
There may be things that have not been animated or transmitted abroad.
Here is a little more information about the Japanese meaning of the title.

YuYu Hakusho; This is a term coined for the title in Japanese.
The first “YU” is YUREI’s “YU”. “YUREI” is a ghost. The second “YU” means play.This is YU, the main character, Yusuke. HAKUSHO is a white paper and means report.

The main character dies in the first episode and becomes a ghost. Since the beginning of the story had a lot of comical elements instead of battles, the author was trying to be comical when he gave the title, which may not have a great meaning for the whole work.
I think the main character, Yusuke Urameshi’s “Urameshi” comes from a Japanese fairy tale where a ghost says, “Urameshiya”. That line means “I feel bitter”.
Personally, I think YuYu Hakusho rivaled Dragon Ball in popularity and was Jump’s double billboard.

Slam Dunk; It’s also of English origin in Japan.
Does Slam Dunk mean a strong dunk shot? I learned that it can also be used to mean a surefire way to achieve a goal.
This manga is about basketball in a Japanese high school, so it may be difficult for people in the U.S. or Europe to get emotionally involved in the story. However, it is the best work in Japan. I think that Slam Dunk is the most complete manga in Japan. One Piece has a circulation of 500 million copies in 100 volumes in Japan, but Slam Dunk has 120 million copies in 30 volumes. With the recent trend, it has been overtaken in circulation by DEMON SLAYER, but I think it has the highest density as a manga. There are many wise words and many scenes that will shake your heart.
The anime is going to be remade, and I’m pretty sure it’s going to be re-evaluated.

I want to be careful about talking too much about so many titles.

Fist of the North Star; This is the English title.
In Japan, Hokuto no Ken. “Hokuto” is the Big Dipper. The Big Dipper is a star near the North Star, so I don’t think the North Star has much to do with it. I think Ken has two meanings: the main character Kenshiro and fists.

Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya; In Japan, it’s called Saint Seiya.
A saint is a holy warrior, and Seiya is the main character’s name.
It has been quickly adapted into anime and video games, and is even scheduled to be made into a Hollywood live-action movie.

Rokudenashi BLUES; Even in home country, it’s a combination of Japanese and English.
Rokudenashi means Bastard. Bastard’s Blues. It’s a Japanese delinquent manga. There is a lot of fighting among the high-school boys, and the depiction of human relationships and Japanese streets is realistic.The names of the characters are mainly taken from Japanese boxers. The protagonist is Maeda Taison. It’s a play on Mike Tyson.

Kinnikuman; Kinnikuman is Kinnikuman.
It means muscle man. It’s a professional wrestling manga with many superheroes. Terryman, Ramenman, Warsman, and Robin Mask. There are many fascinating superheroes in this manga. Superheroes are called Choujin.

Video Girl; In Japan, it’s Denei Shoujo. The subtitle is Video Girl.
It’s not a word that’s often used in everyday Japanese conversation, but “denei” means “movie” or “film”. It is a dreamlike coming-of-age story where a beautiful girl comes out of a video. It is a masterpiece and has been made into a live-action drama in recent years. Japanese girls drawn by Katsura-sensei are the cutest in Japan.

CITY HUNTER; City Hunter as it is.
The story is about an assassin who takes requests in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Stylish characters, cool story, and comical sex appeal. It is also popular in France and has been made into a movie. I heard that “mokkori” is translated as “mokkori”, is that true?
I would like you to listen to the anime theme song “Get Wild“.

COBRA; Cobra as it is.
It has also been animated as Space Cobra. It is set in space and the characters have a western atmosphere, an image that is also popular around the world. Cobra, like Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star or Ryo Saeba from City Hunter, is a cool grown man for a boy.

STOP!! HIBARIKUN!; Even in home country, it’s a combination of Japanese and English.
“HIBARIKUN” is the name of the main character. The protagonist of this work is the now-familiar cross-dresser known as “otokonoko”. It’s almost 40 years old, but it may be reevaluated due to LGBT awareness.

BØY; BØY as it is. It’s a stylish representation of boy.
In Japan, there was an immensely popular rock band called BOØWY. That’s the root. Ø seems to have the meaning of belonging nowhere and resembling no one.
It is a manga about delinquent Japanese high school students, but there are some cruel depictions.

Hell Teacher Nūbē; Hell Teacher has been translated into English.
Nūbē is a nickname derived from the main character’s surname, Nueno-sensei. A comical battle manga set in an elementary school where ghosts appear. There is an element of sexiness that you wouldn’t expect from an elementary school student.
Nueno’s left hand is the hand of an ogre that can defeat his enemies.

Dr.Slump; Slump is rendered in katakana, but has the same title.
This is a masterpiece by Akira Toriyama, the Dragon Ball master. The characters are named in the same way as in Dragon Ball.

Kochira Katsushikaku Kamearikouenmae Hashutujo; The meaning is the police box in front of Kameari Park, Katsushika-ku.
It is a huge work with over 200 volumes. It is twice as long as One Piece. It is a work that can be called “the Shonen Jump”, and has supported Shonen Jump as a regular from the beginning to recent years. It’s a connoisseur’s favorite because it features a lot of local Japanese content and current events, but its stable style is very familiar to Japanese people.

There are many more works from the golden age of Shonen Jump alone, but that’s about it for today.
